My discovery of organization & minimalism
I've always had a love/hate relationship with cleaning. I'm either scrubbing baseboards with a toothbrush or leaving dishes to pile up in the sink. There's never been an in-between.
Living in mess or cluttered areas leave me feeling overwhelmed, stressed and trapped. I discovered the concept of decluttering and threw away almost everything I owned (including a highly toxic marriage)! Some of it was great, and some items were really missed after the fact. *the first coffee table I ever bought and a few couches*
I read everything from Marie kondo, to watching videos on YouTube by actual cleaning companies. I was obsessed.... But also not obsessed.
I realized after some time that I wasn't looking for a middle ground between cleaning or not, but that I simply had things that I was holding onto for a few daft reasons:
- what if I need it one day?
- my friend/mom etc will feel offended if I get rid of this
- the space must be filled with decorations
- I need lots of furniture
- what if I have (insert unrealistic number) guests?
Basically I had a whole bunch of reasons to feel weighed down by my own perceptions.
In truth, my whole life was a bit messy. I needed to get to the core of all of it, which lead me to a few things:
1. I have trauma left to deal with in a healthy way
2. I need to focus my energy
3. My home is 100% a reflection of my mental state
4. I have too much that does not "spark joy" for me.
And so I ended up starting a new journey of emotional, mental and physical decluttering!
So... Here's the plan :
* get rid of /donate any item which I will not enjoy looking at/cleaning /using (within reason)
*create an area for my daughter that does not overpower my senses (this is a tough one!!!)
*deal with the emotional /mental trauma - most likely through 'holistic healing' as that resonates with me right now
*observe progress and enjoy literally having less stuff to clean
I think the most difficult part will be creating an area /space that my daughter enjoys playing in, but that won't end up overfilling spaces in our home!
If you are on a similar journey, please feel free to share your experiences - it's always great to hear a different perspective/idea!
I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you all soon!
